3R THURSDAY: The Lion, the Witch-Hunt, and the Wolf in Sheep’s Robe.
What is the Christian response to a false believer in the church?
To an enemy within?
To a traitor in our midst?
To a wolf in the flock?
Peter tells us that the enemy prowls like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5: 8
Knowing that this is expected, how should we respond if/when someone “gets in”?
Should we hate them?
Be angry at them?
Hurt by them?
Confused at their actions?
Seek vengeance for their atrocities?
The Council was worried about men that had disturbed the church and troubled their minds with falsities. Acts 15:24
So they choose Judas and Silas to minister to the church.
They tasked the church to abstain from a variety of things, including sexual immorality. Acts 15: 29. Judas and Silas were there to reinforce the walls—to protect the church.
And the church was encouraged and strengthened as a result. Acts 15: 32
Regarding heinous sexual immortality, Paul told the Church to purge such evil.
It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife. And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.
For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.
Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”
What other evil needs to be purged?
If we missed them, who else are we missing?
It’s almost too easy to be on a witch-hunt.
Is everyone a traitor?
Is everyone a liar?
Is everyone a false believer?
Let’s burn them at the stake—right?
Well, that mirror looks awful suspect.
What is that guy up to?
What does he do when no one is looking?
What does he do when he ignores the holiness of God?
And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”
Call evil for what it is: evil.
Call sin for what it is: sin.
Those that practice evil should be purged from the church. Period.
How far do we take it then?
Should we purge all evil? And remove every sinner from our midst?
“Goodbye Church. Hello World.”
No—right? Do I need to answer my rhetorical question? Does that make it a rhetorical answer?
No—we’re commanded to let love be genuine and abhor what is evil while holding fast to what is good.
Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
There should be a healthy tension between “burn her anyway” and trust that vengeance belongs to the Lord.
We should feel the full range of emotions: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
Thankfully, we have the Word of God to show us what our response should be.
Yes, the Lion prowls.
No, we shouldn’t be on a Witch-Hunt.
Yes, there are wolves in sheep’s robes.
But do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
How do we move forward?
We start where we began: in community, on mission, all for the glory of God through the grace of Jesus Christ.
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
God is not taken by surprise. He is not caught off guard.
The church should have robust policies and procedures to protect its members. These are the walls that should be in place.
And then pray.
Pray for protection.
Pray for wisdom.
Pray that our church would hold fast to the covenant we made with each other; that we would each maintain our vertical relationship with God and our horizontal relationship with each other .
To God be the glory.
Hope you have a blessed week.
See you next Thursday,
CFW
